An independent inquiry with “wide-ranging powers” is set to investigate the New South Wales greyhound racing industry following recent concerns about animal welfare within the sector. The inquiry will be led by the Greyhound Welfare Integrity Commission (GWIC) and headed by acting commissioner Lea Drake.

A comprehensive investigation into complaints:

Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris announced that the inquiry would address multiple complaints surrounding Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW), encompassing track safety, animal welfare, and operational practices. Ms. Drake is tasked with reporting her findings to Minister Harris by December 13.

As the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports, this inquiry comes on the heels of Rob Macaulay’s resignation as GRNSW CEO, which followed a critical “handover report” by Alex Brittan, the state’s former Greyhound Racing chief veterinary officer.

Activision Blizzard has confirmed that a “small number” of employees on its Hearthstone team have been laid off.

Word of the layoffs surfaced late yesterday in LinkedIn posts by former Blizzard employees. “After 18 and a half years at Blizzard Entertainment, I’ve been laid off without notice as of today,” tools engineer Hunter C. wrote. “The Hearthstone Team is apparently being restructured and my Tools Engineer role is no longer needed.”

In a separate comment, Hunter C. added, “I know I’m not the only one being hit.”

Senior producer Joe Belousek was one of the other employees caught up in the layoffs. “Today, after two years, I was unexpectedly laid off from the Hearthstone team,” Belousek said in his own post. “It wasn’t a long time, but I made the most of it and was making it mine.

“Goodbye to the big campus orc, hopefully, we’ll both see better days soon. GLHF Hearthstone team.”

There’s been a lot of confusion in Helldivers 2 recently. With some players misunderstanding a recent Major Order and a bit of distracted managed democracy, some are calling for a change to how supply lines are laid out. 

Divers were making a brave effort to liberate the Western Front, fighting with everything they had against the Automatons, but unfortunately, everything fell apart after a mid-order change. Joel (the Game Master) decided to make players choose between defending the planet Draupnir and liberating Ubanea. The sudden change and rapid confusion that spread across the ranks meant that many ended up choosing to fight for Ubanea too late and, therefore, lost access to the planet, a crucial stepping stone to the final goal of the Major Order, Tibit. 

The supply lines that would have aided Divers in the completion of the Major Order to restore Tibit were pretty unclear, so much so that one soldier, Thekrzysiek, decided to create a mockup of what a clearer supply line map could look like. The 2019 Rugby World Cup kicked off Friday in Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium, and Google has marked the occasion with a Doodle of a scrum.

This year marks the first time that the Rugby World Cup, held every four years, has had a host in Asia in the competition’s 32-year history.

Kicking off the competition are Japan and Russia—they will be competing in front of 49,970 fans in Tokyo and a predicted domestic TV audience of 40 million, the Guardian reports.

The 2019 World Cup has been billed as “the most open tournament in history” by commentators as traditional powerhouse nations New Zealand, England, Ireland, Wales, South Africa and Australia are all “real contenders.”

Over the next seven weeks, 20 teams, including the U.S. (currently ranked 13th in a world) will compete for the title; the winners returning home with the Webb Ellis Cup. 30 days ago, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive broke its all-time record for concurrent players like the boss it is. This iteration of the game is eleven years old, while Counter-Strike itself has been around since 1999. Barely one month on, CS:GO has just done it again: This weekend it reached a new peak of 1.4 million concurrent players.

The previous record was 1.32 million in February 2023. The new record was reached on Saturday March 11 at 13:00 UTC, per SteamDB, and is 1,420,183 players at once. This type of sustained growth so far from the game’s release is remarkable and, while many have been theorising about why now, any answer eventually ends up back at the game’s rock -fundamentals. When Valorant came out I thought this might be the game to tempt me away from CS:GO. That didn’t last.

The CS:GO twitter account took a break from tormenting fans with memes to acknowledge the new milestone with what I guess you could call a humble-gag.

Diablo 4’s world bosses are meant to be fought by several players, but a single pair of pants gives Rogues the power to instantly take them down alone.

Rogues work differently than other classes in DIablo 4. Classes like Sorcerers spend mana to cast spells, but Rogues use Energy and, optionally, Combo Points—which generate on basic attacks.

Normally, Rogues can’t benefit from item stats that increase a your primary resource the same way that others can because of their Combo Point specialization. Rogues can generate up to three Combo Points at a time and use skills that spend them to increase their damage. They can only have a total of three combo points, as illustrated by the three triangles in the UI.

But Tibault’s Will, one of season 2’s new unique items breaks that rule, and the way it works is far too powerful for it to be intended. Instead of giving Rogues more Energy to use certain skills, the pants give them more total combo points, up to 23. The problem wouldn’t be so bad if there were no way to quickly build up a ton of combo points at once, but Condemnation, a unique dagger, has a bonus that will do just that.

Activision’s rollout of the new “Call of Duty HQ” launcher has been anything but elegant. The HQ, which is really just a rebranded frontend for a single CoD game, is the only way to launch the new Modern Warfare 3, and until yesterday, that process was a real slog. To play MW3, you had to first launch the CoD HQ, then click MW3, then return to the desktop, then wait for the actual game you wanted to play to boot.

That’s now been reversed by a patch deployed on the eve of Modern Warfare 3’s full release: Launching “Call of Duty” now takes you to the front end of Modern Warfare 3 (whether you actually own it or not), and switching over to last year’s MW2 or Warzone now requires a return to desktop first. Essentially, MW3 is now the homepage of CoD, making the launch process easy for folks making the leap to the new game, but simultaneously much worse for the hundreds of thousands of people who prefer to stick to Warzone, DMZ, or Modern Warfare 2.

A Youtube channel specialising in Minecraft animations has produced an incredible recreation of the recent Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer using Minecraft assets and Unreal Engine 5. Boranium Art, run by the Miami-based Ray Escobar and three collaborators, cut its teeth with an almost equally impressive recreation of the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer a year ago (and also has a thing for Oppenheimer-via-Minecraft), but this raises the bar and then some.

Not only does this recreate the trailer shot-for-shot, but easily the most impressive aspect of it is how it captures the tonal aesthetic of Rockstar’s Vice City: the neon-flecked nights, the breathtaking sun-kissed sweeps, and the grimy urban sheen. The eagle-eyed Minecrafters will spot it uses the Minecraft Story mode style for the characters, and several GTA elements have been swapped-out for Minecraft in-jokes.

But given this is the year of our lord 2024, perhaps the first important clarification is this: “It’s not AI,” says Escobar. Helldivers 2 has announced the latest twist in its galactic war, and it’s one that will have Helldivers rushing in en masse. The planet under attack by the Automatons is Tien Kwan, a name that will be familiar to any liberty-loving patriot who saw Arrowhead’s mech tease a few days ago: Yep, this is the place where they make mechs.

Now, the question of why an Automaton might want an exosuit is just the type of commie reaction I’d expect from someone who isn’t currently diving into Tien Kwan at a rate of knots. Make no mistake that if these robots get hold of more robot bits they’ll probably be comforted or something, and such shall not be tolerated.

This is the kind of situation where one name is going to be on every player’s lips: Joel. The Helldivers 2 game master is watching over the game’s meta-structure for moments such as this, and no matter how many soldiers Super Earth sends, the Automatons won’t be going down easily: the whole job is ensuring that the live service side doesn’t feel like most every other game.

The country has been overrun by zombie hordes, but instead of hacking them up with a machete you hack their brains with technology, turning them into loyal companions who can help you fight, gather, build, and survive.

Your mind-controlled zombies aren’t as cute and cuddly as Palworld’s critters, but they’re sort of charming in their own way and they look incredibly useful in the gameplay trailer below. When you capture one of these shambling, rotting former humans, clap a device onto its head and it’ll start following you around. Thanks to a little control panel you can assign them different tasks in and out of combat, and load them up with gear like tools and weapons. Each “zombot,” as they’re called, can help you build your base, gather resources, and even shuffle around in the garden to plant and harvest crops.
